A Search for Cold Dark Matter with Cryogenic Detectors at the Soudan Mine
CDMS-II was an improved version of the original CDMS experiment, with better shielding and a much deeper location at Soudan (2341’ underground). The germanium and silicon detectors were of a new type, labeled Z-sensitive ionization and phonon (ZIP), that provided greatly-improved discrimination between nuclear recoil signatures expected from dark matter particles and electron recoils produced by most normal matter particle interactions. CDMS-II led the dark matter direct detection field for most of its history in tightening limits on dark matter interactions with normal matter, but produced only two hints for dark matter signals.
