Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search at Soudan Mine
A new style of detector, with interleaved Z-sensitive Ionization and Phonon sensors (iZIP), was developed and deployed in the CDMS facility at Soudan, resulting in substantially improved rejection of surface event backgrounds that had limited CDMS-II. A new style of operating these detectors with larger voltages across the germanium crystals, labeled CDMS Low Ionization Threshold Experiment (CDMSlite), provided extremely low energy thresholds and sensitivity to very low mass dark matter particles. SuperCDMS Soudan leads the direct detection field in sensitivity to these light WIMPs.
